Well, I’ve got the book and I’ve watched the movie so I’m goin to write something about it. Honestly after watching the movie though Richard Gere and Diane Lane are charming, I must admit that the reading is more fun.

The book

The chapter is begun with a loss of a husband of Amanda. Her family was trying to help but it seems Amanda depression pull her stronger that no one ever feel whats she been through. She was wrong. Her mother, Adrienne Willis was once a devastated wife with a sick father, left by her husband for a younger woman revealed her secret to encouraging Amanda that there is always a second chance. Then the love story is begun…

When the sad Adrienne took few days off from her family to manage her friend cottage in Rodanthe she never expected someone will change her life the time she meet Paul. Paul Flanner is a famous surgery doctor who always working hard all the time until he lost his family- emotionally. His son’s, Mark trying to reach out for his father attention by followed his profession and become a doctor. But the distance was still unbreakable between them and Mark left to work in an abroad clinic somewhere in Ecuador. After a case in his clinic, Paul Flanner decided to sell everything that he had including his house. He went to Rodanthe to see the husband of his died patient who wrote him a letter and that was the place where she met Adrienne.

In their own world with their own complexity in crisis of conscience, the conversations and one stormy night in Rodanthe is like giving them a hope for the second chance to found the feeling they once lost, to love. They spend the last few days in Rodanthe together until Paul have to go to Ecuador as he planned before. In his mind, he wants to catch up those missing time with Mark and Adrienne support his idea as she have to deal with her own matter before they could go back together. Letters become their connection until one day Mark appears at her house with bad news about Paul. He died.

Adrienne told Amanda about this with a hope that she’ll survive her condition that somehow that will be a miracle for the second chance and she must live for that.

The movie

The movie start with Adrienne troubles with her children and Jack, her ex-husband also her sadness about her father death. Jack is trying to get Adrienne back as his wife with using his children especially Amanda who really want to get her parent back together though Adrinne feeling is in the middle of nowhere. She love her children it just that she still couldn’t forget the feeling that Jack put her under with his betrayal.

Then Adrienne took few days off from her family to manage her friend cottage in Rhodante. With her emotional burdon she used the time to think. And then she met Paul. The love story is almost the same as it is written in the book with some additional chapter.

Then Paul went to Ecuador to see his son Mark while Adrienne back to her house, rejecting Jack’s idea for getting back again, and happily continue her hobby as a carpenter (it shown she was making a tinderbox for Paul from the wood that she found on the beach after Paul left). Paul promised to comeback after a year so both of them wrote each other a letter until then. The troubled with Amanda is deceased though she still upset about her parent separation.

On the big day as promised, Adrienne waiting for Paul to arrive. It is describe that she was using a dress and put some make up, waiting eagerly but Paul didn’t come. The next morning Mark is coming to her house and gave the bad news. Once again Adrienne was shown troubled with her feeling for loosing Paul. Adrienne still in the shock and sadness shown in a scene where with her pale face she sit alone with the empty eyes, ignoring everything surround her including her children. The ignorant Amanda suddenly turn into a care child for her mom and a good sister for her brother. Then there is a scene where Amanda trying to find out what wrong with her mom, they both jump into a conversation and Adrienne told her about Paul.

The movie ended up with a scene where Adrienne took her children to Rodanthe, spreading flowers on to the sea from the end of the dock to remember Paul. Then while the soliter Adrienne walking on the beach suddenly a group of horse running passed her by, she was smiling and laughing. The end. (Whaaat????)

Honestly I don’t know what the meaning of that last scene, you were walking alone on the beach then suddenly a group of horses appeared and running passed you by. Though horse represented strength they just don’t show up on a cozy beach when you were walking (eventhough I bet it’s a difficult scene to do involving crews and bunch of horses somehow I still think it weird).  And there were some missing points from the book which had crucial values that didn’t include in the movie.

But as you all know, this is only my personal opinion so if you want to get the complete review, I suggest you read it first and watch it for sure okay?! ^^

if you were paying attention to the movie then you would remember diane lane telling richard gere about the wild horses that run on the beach and if hes lucky enough he might get to see them. then when they are both walking he says do u think we are going to see the horses, and diane tells him that they never come this far down the beach and he replies one day they will youll see. so at the end thats what the essence of the scene is, its like he is sending her a secret message.

  6. During the movie & book, she explains to the doctor – first that he may actually see the wild “banker” ponies while he was there. Later she told him that the ponies never come that far south. Before he left, he told her that maybe she would see the ponies that day. Seeing the ponies was (in my opinion) a sign from him.
There are no wild ponies on Hatteras Island. But there is a beautiful herd on the northern most part of the Outer Banks in the Carova Beach area. I’ve seen them and they will take your breath away to watch them run in the surf!

First I want to say thank you for stopping by and share your point of view towards the movie posting, I really appreciate that. But as I written up there, its only my personal review and yes though in general the movie is beautiful (including the horses of course) but somehow I feel there were some huge difference from the book and I was expecting more than just horses for the end.

Hummm…. I hope both of you could understand what I’m trying to say up here ^^
